Mayerling
Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria openly challenges his father, Emperor Franz Joseph I, over the adoption of reform-minded, progressive policies for the empire. He perceives himself as a man out of time in a nation slow to recognize the necessity of social reform. The Prince of Wales, who would become King Edward VII of Britain, provides comic relief. To escape a loveless marriage with Princess Stéphanie, Rudolf enters a secret liaison with Baroness Maria Vetsera. The lovers’ untimely deaths at Mayerling, the imperial family’s hunting lodge, remain enveloped in mystery.
