Ming Dynasty
Sun Ruo Wei loses her entire family to an imperial edict issued by the Yongle Emperor in 1402, yet she survives through a secret adoption by Sun Zhong. She enters the imperial court as the crown prince Zhu Zhan Ji's concubine by accident and dedicates herself to uncovering the truth behind her family's deaths. Ultimately, she relinquishes her vendetta after recognizing that personal retribution could destabilize the realm. Moved by Zhu Zhan Ji's generosity, Sun Ruo Wei vows to become a virtuous empress who can bear the burdens beside him through hardship. A decade into his reign, Zhu Zhan Ji dies, and when seven-year-old Zhu Qi Zhen ascends the throne, Sun Ruo Wei is honored as Empress Dowager.
