North China Factory
This 1980 documentary surveys a Chinese factory town where more than 6,000 workers transform raw cotton into 90 million yards of high-quality cloth each year, through spinning, weaving, and finishing. It also portrays the workers’ housing, social facilities, recreational spaces, and educational amenities, all located on the factory grounds. The film offers an engrossing portrait of a lifestyle markedly different from that of the Western world.
