On the morning of March 16, 1978, the US-owned, Liberian-registered supertanker Amoco Cadiz ran aground off Brittany, unleashing the largest oil spill in history as its entire cargo of 68 million gallons poured into the sea over the ensuing days and weeks. A NOVA crew arrived at the scene soon after the catastrophe to document the cleanup operations, the spill's impact on the region's tourism and fishing industries, and the collaborative efforts of American and French marine biologists to trace the oil's journey through the environment.
