On This Island

Set in a sharp, satirical portrait of contemporary Britain, Hadrian is a young, ambitious civil servant who arranges to take Greek lessons in preparation for a government promotion that would place him at the helm of British economic policy across Greece. But when he meets his teacher Maria, she proposes that instead of payment, Hadrian devote an hour of his time each week to helping her prepare for a citizenship exam that could win her promotion from Class B to Class A immigrant.
