Othello
The earliest surviving British television adaptation of Othello features black American actor Gordon Heath in the title role. This edition marks the first televised version to cast a black actor as Othello. Heath, an American who arrived in Britain in 1947, was cast by Kenneth Tynan to star in his 1950 Arts Council production. The drama unfolds across Venice and Cyprus, with the original staging combining a part-live performance and recorded Venice sequences.
