David, a struggling comedy writer fresh off a breakup with his boyfriend, relocates from New York City to Sacramento to care for his ailing mother. Returning home after ten years, he shares a roof with his conservative father and much younger sisters, and he feels like a stranger in the house of his childhood. As his mother's health deteriorates, David frantically seeks meaning in this brutal turn of events and tries to convince everyone—including himself—that he's "doing okay."
