Set in 1990, a solitary bachelor named David longs to escape the day-to-day drudgery of caring for his aging mother. In his search for companionship via a video dating service, he encounters a strange VHS tape called Rent-A-Pal. Presented by the charming and magnetic Andy, the tape promises him much-needed company, empathy, and friendship. But Andy's friendship comes at a price, and David desperately struggles to afford the price of admission.
