Songs of the madmen
The Bauls of West Bengal are itinerant musicians preserving a time-honored musical tradition that is challenged by India's rapid modernization. The term 'Fous' designates the inspired wandering musicians of Bengal known as Baül. The word Baül derives from the Sanskrit vatul, a label often associated with 'mad' in French usage, signaling frenetic vitality. The Baül are idiosyncratic figures, notable for their distinctive manners, customs, and practices. While they may belong to Hindu or Muslim communities, the Baül refuse to be governed by social or religious conventions. Freedom of spirit is their sole compass, leading them to move against prevailing habits, prejudices, and received theories. 'Le chant des fous' (The Song of the Mad) is a film directed by Georges Luneau.
