Strangers with Candy
Jerri Blank, a former sex worker and addict, returns to high school as a 46-year-old freshman at Flatpoint High. After leaving home as a teenager, she drifted into a life of excess, describing herself as a boozer, a user, and a loser, funding her drug habit through prostitution, stripping, and theft. She has served multiple stints in prison, the latest for stealing a television. At home, her father Guy lies in a coma, yet he appears capable of astonishing feats. Her stepmother Sara is vain and bitter, and her stepbrother Derrick is a bullying jock. Jerri strives to do the right thing, but her lessons repeatedly go awry. Her hijinks often revolve around, or involve, the neurotic history teacher Chuck Noblet and his secret lover, the sensitive art teacher Geoffrey Jellineck.
