In its initial incarnation, running from April to June 1982, the story is anchored at Millard Fillmore High School in Los Angeles. Diana Swanson serves as an English teacher, Ben Cooper guides the school as principal, Michael Dreyfuss and Gwen Edwards are colleagues among the teaching staff, Mr. Brody holds the role of assistant principal, and Mr. Pafko serves as the janitor. The majority of scenes take place within the faculty dining room and lounge, a domain kept off-limits to students.
