The Brothers Karamazov

Ryevsk, Russia, 1870 — a cauldron of fraternal strain within the Karamazov clan. Fyodor, a wealthy libertine who hoards his wealth with a tight purse, keeps a firm grip on his treasury. His four grown sons include Dmitri, the eldest, an elegant officer perpetually impecunious and at odds with his father, betrothed to Katya, a beauty of means. The remaining brothers comprise a sterile aesthete, a factotum who is a bastard, and a monk. Tensions flare when Dmitri falls for one of Fyodor’s mistresses, the coquette Grushenka. Two brothers see Dmitri’s jealousy of their father as a doorway to earlier inheritance. Acts of violence propel the tale toward trials of honor, conscience, forgiveness, and redemption.
