An affluent American widower, Adam Verver, and his daughter Maggie lead a cultivated life in Europe, immersed in art. Maggie marries the impoverished Italian Prince Amerigo, while Adam weds Maggie's friend Charlotte Stant. The Prince and Charlotte begin an affair, which Maggie discovers, and she undertakes a tacit, psychological duel of wills, ultimately leveraging her own sagacity to safeguard her marriage and shield her father, Adam Verver.
