Darien Fawkes, a seasoned con-man and thief, is captured for the third time. To evade California's three-strike policy, he volunteers for an experimental procedure conducted by his brother Kevin. Kevin and a fellow scientist, Arnaud, have devised a synthetic gland that secretes Quicksilver, a substance capable of bending light. They implant the gland in Darien's skull. He quickly realizes what has happened and is far from pleased. His dismay deepens when they reveal that the gland releases Quicksilver into the recipient's brain, and enough of it can drive a person insane. Darien learns to control his enhanced abilities and soon uncovers that Arnaud is pursuing something sinister. Arnaud insists Darien is insane whenever he accuses the scientists, but then Arnaud's mercenaries break in, steal the gland's data, and kill everyone except Darien. Darien goes to his ex-girlfriend, a physician furious at him for hiding his past. She refuses to believe he can turn invisible, and then Darien is taken away by
