The Lower Depths
Inhabitants of a dilapidated flophouse struggle to survive under the brutal rule of their landlord, Kostyleva. Among them, the young thief Wasska Pepel ends his affair with Kostyleva's wife, Vassilissa, and takes up with her sister, Natacha. Pepel also befriends the baron, a former nobleman fallen on hard times, but his pursuit of happiness is complicated when he's accused of murder by a spiteful Vassilissa.
