Season 4 opens immediately after the cliffhanger, where the effort to restore magic has succeeded yet is now strictly allocated among the Neitherworld librarians. Dean Fogg has also secured the lives of his Brakebills students with a spell that functions as a witness-protection program. While Alice remains untouched, she sits in a jail cell, whereas Quentin, Julia, Kady, Margo, Penny, and Josh have assumed new identities on Earth—and have forgotten their true selves. To them, they are their alter egos—down to DJ Hansel. These drastic precautions were essential to shield them from a merciless, shape-shifting predator known only as the Monster, intent on vengeance for their attempt on its life.
