Henry Hackett is the work-obsessed editor of a New York City tabloid. He thrives on the job, but long hours and a low salary are driving his discontent. Meanwhile, publisher Bernie White faces financial strain and enlists his ruthless hatchet-man, Alicia Clark - Henry's nemesis - to enforce unpopular cutbacks.
