The Tragedy of King Lear
Shakespeare's tragedy follows an aging king who divides his realm among his daughters, weighing their declarations of love as the measure of his favor. Cordelia, the youngest and most honest, refuses to flatter him for power and is banished, while Lear turns to his remaining daughters. Goneril and Regan harbor no real affection and together scheme to seize his authority. In a parallel thread, Lear’s loyal courtier Gloucester trusts his illegitimate son Edmund after being deceived by falsehoods about his faithful son Edgar. Tragically, both ill-fated fathers descend into madness and endure unimaginable suffering.
