The World, the Flesh and the Devil
Ralph Burton, a miner, is trapped underground for several days after a cave-in. When he finally claws his way out, he discovers that humanity has been annihilated by a nuclear holocaust. He travels to New York City, only to find it in desolate silence. Determined to endure, he begins to forge a life there and is stunned to meet Sarah Crandall, another survivor. The two form a close friendship until the arrival of Benson Thacker, who has steered his small boat into the city's harbor. Tensions rise among the trio, especially between Thacker, a white man, and Burton, a Black man.
