Season 1

Henry and Muriel Rush own a duplex in San Francisco, where they live in a cramped and awkward arrangement with their two adult daughters: Jackie, a 21-year-old banker, and Sara, an 18-year-old college freshman. Henry works as a cartoonist on the comic strip Cosmic Cow, while Muriel is a former musician now employed as a photographer. When their downstairs tenant, Myron Rafkin, dies unexpectedly, the family uncovers that he had been leading a hidden life as a transvestite, revealing that the many mysterious women Henry had been letting in over the years were actually Rafkin himself. Sara then suggests that she and Jackie persuade their parents to allow them to move into Rafkin’s former apartment. Henry initially refuses, but after interviewing a pair of prospective tenants he dislikes, Muriel convinces him that letting the girls move in may not be such a bad idea.
