Fred Martinez, a 16-year-old Navajo youth, was slain by a man who boasted to his friends that he 'bug-smashed a fag.' Fred belonged to a revered Navajo tradition—the nadleeh, or two-spirit—an identity that embodies a balance of masculine and feminine traits.
