Underwater Papanikolis
October 28, 1940. As Italian forces strike the Greek–Albanian frontier and the Italian air force pounds Greek positions, the submarine Papanikolis, commanded by Captain Milto Iatridis with First Officer Vasilis Aslanoglou, is ordered to patrol the Gulf of Patras. In the wake of army victories, the war council decrees that the navy must enter the conflict and assigns Papanikolis to patrol the Strait of Otranto. There, the crew captures the crew of an Italian ship, and its engineer reveals the Adriatic minefields. Thus Papanikolis begins its mission. After completing it, it returns to its base, where it is honored.
