An explosion cripples Ystad's power grid, plunging the city into darkness. Wallander and his colleagues—mid-crayfish party at his newly bought house—are summoned in the dead of night to confront the crisis. Concurrently, the municipal commissioner, who has just approved and inaugurated an exhibition showing pictures of Muhammed, the muslim prophet, at City Hall, is found murdered in his home. With fewer policemen than usual for various reasons, Wallander and his team struggle to handle both cases. Matters worsen as several cars placed on roads around Ystad explode, SäPo begins questioning, and the police commissioner calls in the army to keep Ystad safe. To make things even more complicated for Wallander.
