Westfront 1918
A unit of German infantrymen from the First World War endures life in the trenches of France. They seek brief entertainment and relief in a village behind the lines, yet fear dominates as the ebb and flow of attacks by and from the French army unsettles their days. One man, Karl, goes home on leave and discovers the degradation forced on his family by wartime poverty. He returns to the lines in time to face an enormous attack by French tanks.
