When the Cows Come Home
When the Cows Come Home introduces Tilly and Maggie, two cows saved from slaughter by Andrew Johnstone—a musician, journalist, artist and cow whisperer. This gregarious herdsman is eager to share his insights on animal husbandry, bovine communication, and the twists and turns of life, as the film then retraces the experiences that shaped the singular farmer-philosopher. From a personal family tragedy to conflicts with Catholic school authorities, from pioneering in Hamilton's fledgling music scene to staging guerrilla art installations, Johnstone's life unfolds along an idiosyncratic trajectory. Though mental health challenges may have driven him to retreat to the farm, the documentary makes clear that his restless curiosity remains very much alive, far from being put out to pasture.
