Why Shoot the Teacher?

In the winter of 1935, Max Brown arrives in Willowgreen, Saskatchewan—a rural Canadian prairie town—to accept his first teaching post in a one-room schoolhouse. He soon discovers that this is no dream assignment: the winter proves harsher than any he has endured, he lives in the school's basement, the older pupils treat him with contempt, and his wages are meager, if they arrive at all.
