About FIFA World Cup 2026

48 teams, 104 matches, and a historic North American edition.

FIFA World Cup 2026 is a historic event in football history because this time the competition will be contested among 48 teams in the 23rd installment of the world cup. The FIFA World Cup 2026™ will take place in North America, where it will be held jointly by three countries: The USA, Canada, and Mexico from 11th June to 19th July 2026. The world cup is expected to see 104 matches being played in 39 days.

Teams Who Qualified to Participate

There were 16 additional slots as compared to previous competitions, and the continental qualification process became historic for some of the rising football powers. The three host nations qualified automatically, while the other 45 places were highly contested among the six continental confederations under FIFA, with some of the qualifying teams making their debut at the tournament, such as Curaçao and Uzbekistan.

  • Host Countries (Automatic): Canada, Mexico, and the USA
  • Previous Champions: Argentina
  • UEFA (European): Germany, Spain, France, Netherlands, Norway, Croatia
  • CONMEBOL (South American): Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Ecuador, Paraguay
  • AFC (Asian): Japan, South Korea, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Uzbekistan (Debut)

Format of the Tournament and Groups

All 48 nations participating in the tournament are categorized into 12 groups of four nations each (A-L). In the group stage, the round-robin format is adopted whereby each team plays three matches. In the knockout stage, there is a new round known as the Round of 32 which has never been introduced before. The first two nations in each group qualify for the knockout stage, while eight nations that finish third in their respective groups also get to participate in the knockout stage. The finalist teams have to win eight matches in the knockout stage.
