Critchlow Receives Top Honor at International Energy Journalism Awards

Andrew (Andy) Critchlow, head of energy news for Dow Jones Energy, has been awarded the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Energy Journalism Awards. The honor recognizes his contributions to the field over a career spanning more than 25 years. Critchlow returned to Dow Jones earlier this year before receiving the award. The recognition marks a significant milestone in his professional timeline, which includes extensive reporting on energy sectors in conflict zones and global markets.

From Military Service to Conflict Zone Reporting

Critchlow’s career path began outside of journalism. He previously served in the British Army’s Grenadier Guards. During his military service, his duties included guarding Queen Elizabeth II and serving in Northern Ireland during "The Troubles."

His transition to energy journalism led him to report on major geopolitical events, including the Iraq invasion starting in 2003. Critchlow reported from Baghdad after the collapse of Saddam Hussein’s regime, walking through the abandoned oil ministry building. To enter Baghdad during the invasion, Critchlow received $2,000 in cash and a satellite phone from his editor at Middle East Economic Digest. He hitched a ride from Basra with former British Army comrades to reach the capital.

The coverage of the post-invasion era in the Gulf states earned recognition for his team. The Dow Jones Newswires team, led by Critchlow, won a William R. Clabby Award for its reporting during that period.

Changing Landscape of Energy Reporting

Critchlow noted that the nature of energy journalism has shifted significantly over the last quarter-century. He stated that energy reporting has become more mainstream due to several factors, including conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, climate change concerns, and issues regarding affordability.

However, Critchlow also highlighted increased difficulties in accessing information compared to when he started his career more than 25 years ago. He noted that OPEC has banned many international news publishers and reporters from attending its meetings, making reporting more challenging. Critchlow’s work continues to focus on energy news as part of the Dow Jones Energy team, building on a history that bridges military service, frontline conflict reporting, and global market analysis.
