Genetic Insights from Whole Genome Sequencing

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has made public the results of his whole genome sequencing, a process undertaken to better understand his body's functioning and identify potential future health risks. The Arsenal boss explained that prioritizing personal health is the foundation of effective leadership, arguing that leaders must first manage their own well-being to maintain the energy and emotional connection required for elite performance.

Arteta partnered with global healthcare company Bupa for the genome sequencing initiative. The project aims to help individuals understand how genetics and lifestyle factors may shape long-term health outcomes. Melvin Samsom, group chief medical officer at Bupa, stated that Arteta’s results have prompted him to examine his nutrition and daily choices more closely to support his long-term health.

The genetic test revealed specific findings for the Arsenal manager. The results indicated an increased likelihood of coeliac disease and a level of lactose intolerance. Arteta noted that having the test provided him with peace of mind and facilitated conversations with his family regarding their future health prospects.

Health as a Component of Elite Leadership

Arteta, who managed one of the most successful soccer clubs in the world at the time of the interview, described health as a "foundational" element of elite-level leadership. He stated that leaders must lead themselves by looking after their health to sustain well-being and emotional connections with others.

The Arsenal manager is known for a management approach that follows the rule of the "aggregation of marginal gains," where incremental improvements collectively determine success. This philosophy extends to his personal health regimen, which he views as critical to his professional role.

Arteta has a history of medical issues, having suffered from a serious heart condition when he was young. He cited this past experience as a factor in his decision to undergo genetic testing and share the results publicly.

Arsenal's Recent Success

Under Arteta’s management, Arsenal won the English Premier League title last year for the first time in 22 years. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the club during his tenure as manager.
