Banner Takes Helm Amidst Organizational Shift

Jared Banner was introduced as the new general manager of the Baltimore Orioles at a news conference on Tuesday, according to the Baltimore Herald. The appointment marks a significant structural change for the franchise as it seeks to reverse recent performance trends.

During his introduction, Banner addressed the current state of the team directly. "I know you’re frustrated. It’s been a rough couple of years... We’re going to build a winner here in Baltimore," Banner told fans at the conference.

The Orioles have experienced a notable regression in recent years. The team won the American League East division in 2023 and qualified as a wild-card team in 2024, but has since recorded two consecutive sub-.500 seasons, according to the Baltimore Herald.

Part of this decline has been marked by struggles from young core players. Gunnar Henderson, Colton Cowser, and Jackson Holliday have all struggled significantly during the team's recent regression, the source noted.

New Executive Structure and Scouting Focus

The appointment comes alongside a reorganization of the front office leadership. Mike Elias, who was hired as general manager eight years ago and became team president last year, will shift his focus within the organization.

Under the new arrangement, Elias will work more directly on scouting and acquisition. Banner will handle internal players, coaches, player development, performance, and health care, according to the Baltimore Herald.

Banner brings prior executive experience to the role. He previously served as an assistant general manager with the Chicago Cubs before joining the Orioles organization.

Addressing Franchise History and Future Challenges

Banner outlined his immediate priorities upon taking the position, stating he will "challenge all of our processes." He emphasized a belief that practice must be made more like the game to improve outcomes.

The new general manager also addressed the recent trade of Adley Rutschman, who was described as a one-time cornerstone of the team's rebuild. The Baltimore Herald noted that a potential lockout looms over the team's future as Elias faces pressure to return the team to contention.

In his first days in the role, Banner has reached out to key figures within the franchise ecosystem. He praised Elias as "one of the most talented executives in the game" and noted that he has scheduled a lunch with franchise legend Cal Ripken Jr., who is part of the ownership group.

Response to Media Commentary

Banner also addressed recent commentary from former Orioles pitcher Jim Palmer. Regarding Palmer’s comments on the "Bmore Sports Podcast," Banner confirmed he had responded directly to the Hall of Famer.

"First and foremost, I made sure I hit Jim back right away... Had to," Banner said regarding the interaction.
