Mendoza Withdraws From Mariners Search

Carlos Mendoza has declined an offer to interview for the Seattle Mariners' managerial position, according to reports from ESPN. The former New York Mets manager informed team executives that he was not interested in the role and subsequently withdrew his name from consideration.

Jorge Castillo of ESPN reported that sources confirmed Mendoza had been a candidate for the Mariners' job before making the decision to step aside. The announcement comes as the Mariners continue their search for a new leader following the conclusion of the 2026 season.

Mendoza will instead join the Philadelphia Phillies organization. He is set to take on the role of third base and infield coach for the team, marking his next professional assignment after his tenure with New York ended earlier this year.

Mariners and Astros Remain Without Managers

The Mariners are currently one of only two Major League Baseball teams without a manager. The Houston Astros remain the other franchise in need of a new skipper, according to reporting from Dose.ca.

Castillo posted on X (formerly Twitter) on October 17, 2026, that the Mariners and Astros were the two teams looking for a manager at that time. The status of both franchises highlights the remaining vacancies in the league as other clubs have already filled their coaching positions.

Mendoza's Recent Coaching History

Mendoza's availability follows his dismissal by the New York Mets during the 2026 season. His departure from New York came after a period where he had established himself as a successful manager, having previously led the Mets deep into the playoffs in 2024.

His decision to turn down the Mariners' offer and accept the coaching role in Philadelphia suggests a preference for a position within the Phillies' organization over the managerial opening in Seattle. The move provides Mendoza with an immediate return to MLB coaching duties after a brief period of unemployment.
