Police Register Case Against Councillor and Organizer

Greater Chennai City Police have registered a case against Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) councillor Sudha Deenadayalan and event organizer Muralidharan over alleged derogatory remarks directed at Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. The legal action follows a complaint filed by TVK Harbour area secretary Udayakumar, who sought proceedings against both individuals for the speech delivered during a party function. The incident occurred on Oct. 7 at an event organized by Muralidharan. Deenadayalan, who serves as a Chennai Corporation ward councillor and the DMK’s Chennai East district women’s wing organiser, allegedly made the remarks during her address. Police described the alleged speech as aimed at inciting hostility against the chief minister. The TVK condemned the speech and demanded an apology from senior DMK leaders who were present at the event. TVK general secretary and Public Works and Sports Development Minister Aadhav Arjuna accused the DMK of allowing its political platforms to become venues for personal abuse. He questioned former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s silence regarding the derogatory remarks against Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Arjuna criticized Priya’s apparent amusement during the speech and Kanimozhi’s failure to intervene publicly, calling for legal action against Deenadayalan to stop what he characterized as abusive political exchanges.

DMK Response and Internal Reprimand

In response to the controversy, the DMK circulated a video it said showed party leader Kanimozhi and P.K. Sekar Babu reprimanding Deenadayalan after the programme. The party stated that the senior leaders asked her to maintain decorum following the incident. Kanimozhi addressed the broader implications of such political conduct, stating that politicians should not allow their opponents’ behaviour to determine their own standards of conduct. In her address, she invoked the ideological foundations of the Dravidian movement, referring to social reformer E.V. Ramasamy (Periyar) and former Chief Ministers C.N. Annadurai and M. Karunanidhi. She argued that the DMK’s political identity was rooted in that heritage. Kanimozhi also criticized the quality of debate in the assembly, alleging that the ruling party avoided answering opposition questions and treated legislative proceedings as material for social media performances. These allegations were reported by the party as part of its defense against the accusations of breaching political decorum. No arrests have been made at this stage. The police investigation continues based on the complaint filed by Udayakumar.
