Widespread Turnover Favors Civic Slates

Civic slates secured a dominant performance in Saturday’s municipal elections across Vancouver Island, according to CHEK News. The results marked a significant shift in local governance, with many incumbent councillors failing to secure re-election. Royal Roads University Associate Professor David Black confirmed the widespread success of these organized groups, noting that they effectively challenged established political structures.

Black attributed the electoral outcomes to the strategic use of civic parties running as unified groups. He stated that these slates possess the organizational capacity to potentially evict mayors and entire councils if their campaigns succeed in unseating incumbents.

Specific Slate Victories Across Municipalities

Centre-right slates achieved notable success in several key municipalities. In Langford, Stew Young’s slate captured the majority of seats, leaving only incumbent Colby Harder from the previous council intact.

In Central Saanich, the "Sustain our Central Saanich" slate demonstrated strong cohesion, with all four of its candidates elected to the municipal council.

The most successful slate identified in the region was "Save Our Saanich." This group won six of the nine open seats on the council. The slate also secured the mayoralty, with Rishi Sharma declared Mayor-Elect.

Voter Turnout and Calls for Change

CHEK News reported that voter turnout increased across Vancouver Island during the 2026 municipal elections. This rise in participation coincided with the sweeping victories of the civic slates.

Mayor-Elect Rishi Sharma told CHEK News that the election results indicated a "time for change and this new energy" among residents. He suggested that voters were seeking a different direction from previous administrations.

Victoria Mayor Marianne Alto acknowledged the drastic changes in councillor composition across the region. She stated that residents are looking for a change in approach to civic issues and confirmed that she has heard their message regarding the need for new leadership styles.

Issues Driving the Electoral Shift

Black explained that these slates succeeded by running campaigns directly against current councils and their mandates. He noted that the campaigns focused heavily on specific local concerns, including growth, development, taxes, and council conduct.

Momentum for Provincial Elections Unclear

While the municipal results highlighted a clear appetite for change at the local level, Black cautioned against assuming this sentiment will automatically translate to higher levels of government. He stated that it remains difficult to predict whether this momentum will benefit conservatives in the upcoming provincial election.
