Rembibas and Bernard Lead Weekly Honors
Melina Rembibas and Germie Bernard have been named Alabama's Athletes of the Week, highlighting standout performances from Tuscaloosa to the professional level. The recognition comes during a week where the broader Crimson Tide athletic program faced significant challenges across multiple sports.
Rembibas, a senior soccer player who previously attended North Carolina, leads the team in assists. She earned the honor after recording an assist in a loss to Vanderbilt and contributing a goal and an assist in a 3-0 victory over Georgia.
Bernard was named the Pro and Clutch Athlete of the Week for his impact with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He tied the franchise's rookie receptions record with 11 catches for 87 yards during the week. His performance included a six-yard touchdown reception in overtime that secured a 26-19 victory over Tampa Bay.
Other Crimson Tide Athletes Recognized
Volleyball freshman Tea Simic was named Freshman of the Week after contributing three assists in a five-set loss to No. 24 Vanderbilt and recording three digs in a loss to Missouri. Simic previously played for Crvena Zvezda in Serbia.
Alabama kicker Conor Talty received Honorable Mention for his perfect kicking performance. Talty was 10-for-10 on field goals and 32-for-32 on extra points. His efforts included a 42-yard field goal against Tennessee, although the Crimson Tide lost that football game 26-10.
Team Performance Context
The individual honors stand in contrast to the overall performance of Alabama's sports teams during this period. Football suffered a 26-10 loss to Tennessee, which drew significant attention. In SEC play, soccer and volleyball combined for a 1-3 record.
NFL players associated with the Crimson Tide had what was described as the quietest week of the season. The usual candidates for freshman honors in other sports, including EJ Crowell, Trae'Shawn Brown, and Xavier Griffin, were noted as being quiet against the Volunteers, leading to the selection of Simic for volleyball.
