Addressing Core Challenges for Muslims

Dr. Abdullah Al-Muslih identified ignorance, disunity, and poverty as the most significant threats facing Muslims today during a recent address in Türkiye. Speaking at the 13th Bediuzzaman Symposium, organized by the İİKV, the Saudi citizen outlined specific methods for addressing these issues.

"Ignorance, disunity and poverty are among the greatest enemies of Muslims. We must fight against them," Al-Muslih said. He detailed a framework for combating these challenges, stating that society should "combat poverty through industry, agriculture and production; ignorance through knowledge; and disunity through understanding and unity." These directives were presented not merely as abstract ideals but as practical imperatives for community survival and progress.

Diagnosing Modern Crises

Al-Muslih characterized the deepest crisis of the modern age as fundamentally a crisis of faith and morality. He argued that individual reform is the prerequisite for broader societal improvement, suggesting that external structural changes are secondary to internal spiritual and ethical development.

According to Al-Muslih, when people reform themselves, goodness follows in political, economic, and social spheres. This perspective forms the basis of his approach to addressing the structural issues he identified within Muslim communities. By prioritizing moral rectitude, he posits that the root causes of societal decay can be effectively neutralized.

Scholarly Background and Influence

Al-Muslih serves as the Secretary-General of the World Council of Islamic Call and Relief. The organization is based in Cairo and coordinates approximately 70 Islamic organizations globally, according to reports. This role places him at the center of a vast network dedicated to religious outreach and humanitarian relief, amplifying the reach of his philosophical arguments.

His engagement with the works of Bediuzzaman Said Nursi began during his time as a student at the Faculty of Sharia in Riyadh. Al-Muslih stated that he first learned about Nursi through Sheikh Salih Özcan while studying there. This early exposure to Nursi's thought, facilitated by a respected mentor, laid the groundwork for his subsequent leadership roles and public advocacy.
