Federal Agents Execute Search Warrant at Representative’s Home
United States federal agents searched the Washington, DC-area home of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar early Monday morning as part of an ongoing criminal investigation. The search was carried out by agents from Homeland Security Investigations, according to two people familiar with the matter cited by The Associated Press.
The Justice Department confirmed that agents executed a court-authorized search warrant but did not identify Omar or provide specific details regarding the nature of the investigation. No charges have been announced in connection with the search.
Reports from Fox News, citing unidentified sources, indicated that the search was linked to allegations of immigration fraud involving paperwork submitted by Omar’s late father when she was a child. Omar has previously denied these allegations.
Political Accusations and Denials
The search follows months of public accusations from Trump administration officials regarding Omar’s immigration status. In September, Tom Holman, President Donald Trump’s border security chief, stated that Omar was the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation without providing further details.
At the time of Holman’s statement, Omar said she had not been contacted by Homeland Security and dismissed the allegations as politically motivated.
Vice President JD Vance has also accused Omar of immigration fraud without providing evidence. In an interview with conservative podcaster Benny Johnson, Vance mused about building a case to investigate her alongside Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller. Omar’s office dismissed Vance’s allegations in March as "fabricated and defamatory." The Justice Department's confirmation of the warrant execution did not elaborate on these specific political claims or the evidence Vance referenced.
History of Threats and Rhetoric
Omar has faced intense scrutiny and hostile rhetoric from the Trump administration. In December, President Trump called Omar and other Somali immigrants "garbage." In February, he stated that Omar and Democratic Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib should be "institutionalized" and sent back to "where they came from." Omar has stated that she and her family have faced death threats due to Trump’s rhetoric, describing his fixation on her as "creepy." She has not made an immediate public response regarding Monday's search.
The Representative has previously been the target of physical violence. In January, a Minnesota court sentenced a man to 14 months in prison for spraying Omar with vinegar during a town hall meeting.
