Kinzinger Details Extended Deployment Timeline

Former Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger warned that a Pentagon decision regarding Air National Guard deployments will inflict lasting damage on U.S. forces. Speaking during a Thursday episode of "The Bulwark Daily" with host Tim Miller, Kinzinger cited information from his sources indicating that pilots deployed to the Middle East have been extended until April.

Kinzinger, an Air Force veteran who previously served as a pilot in the Air National Guard, stated that this extension will keep the affected personnel away from their homes for 15 months. He noted that only the Army had deployed troops for such extended periods during the Iraq War.

Short Notice Activations and Family Impact

Kinzinger described the activation process as having "almost no warning." He quoted a source who said pilots received a 72-hour notice, which he characterized as "unheard of" except for the day after the Sept. 11 attacks. He contrasted this with previous deployments where personnel typically knew a month or two weeks in advance.

He provided an example of a pilot living in Hawaii who traveled to California for Guard duty and was told on the spot she was deploying, leaving no chance to go home first. Kinzinger said pilots are currently there without a plan for rotation and that his source confirmed the extension until April.

Retention Crisis and Economic Disparity

Kinzinger argued the extension causes massive damage to military retention, particularly in the Guard and Reserve. He noted that many affected pilots are part-timers who fly for commercial airlines like United and serve five or six days a month in uniform. Pilots owe 10 years of service after earning their wings, making retention critical.

Kinzinger claimed the toll on families was severe during previous long deployments, with "marriages destroyed." He suggested pilots may leave for commercial airlines like United, which pay $350,000 a year, compared to the U.S. military where a major pilot makes $180,000 while being away from family.

Broader Political Context

The Bulwark lists an episode titled "Adam Kinzinger’s Military Sources Sound the Alarm" featuring Tim Miller and Adam Kinzinger. The network also noted that Democrats on the House Oversight Committee are investigating Musk, providing a broader political backdrop to the discussion.
