G7 Leaders Announce Nine Joint Statements

Instead of adopting an omnibus communique, G7 leaders announced a number of joint statements on issues that concerned this group of advanced countries and economies whose decisions play a crucial role in the different spheres. In all there were nine such statements stretching from geopolitics to supply chains for critical materials to the Ebola crisis.

Health Emergencies

The Ebola crisis has been declared by the World Health Organisation as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, according to notes provided in earlier columns. Other joint statements related to the fight against cancer were included among those covering all countries.

Migration and Drug Trafficking Focus

Two joint statements addressed migration and drug trafficking specifically concerning G7 members. Those relating to safer digital space for minors, balanced durable and resilient growth, and mutually beneficial international partnerships covered all countries.

Geopolitical Statement Details

Vivek Katju noted that among these themes it would be understandable if the attention of a former diplomat like this writer turns first to that on geopolitics. This joint statement deals with three specific issues/areas: the Ukraine and Iran wars, and the Indo-Pacific region.

According to Vivek Katju (published 20 Jun 2026), these statements indirectly target Russia, China, and Iran as main current challengers of the West or causes of economic havoc via closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The author stated that in the case of the Ukraine war Trump has gone along with Europeans to show sternness towards Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Support for Ukraine

This stance is witnessed in assuring Ukraine of Western support and supplying weapons, Vivek Katju reported. The text notes: "We commend Ukraine for its resilience and progress on the battlefield in recent months and emphasize there is now a new momentum." To support and accelerate this new momentum, we agree to increase the delivery of air defence capacities, additional systems.
