Frazier Returns to Starting Lineup for Rivalry Matchup
Georgia football is preparing to welcome back starting running back Nate Frazier for Saturday’s game against the Auburn Tigers. The matchup, known as the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, will take place between the Hedges in Athens.
Frazier is expected to start after missing last Saturday’s 20-17 victory over No. 6 Alabama due to a rib injury. His return marks a significant boost for the Bulldogs’ offense as they face their historic conference rival. According to reports from ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Frazier’s status was confirmed on Gameday Saturday morning, signaling his readiness to rejoin the active roster.
Recent Injury Timeline and Absence
Frazier’s absence from the lineup began earlier this month. He was pulled from Georgia’s game against Arkansas in mid-September. Following that appearance, he did not play in the subsequent contest against Ole Miss or the Alabama game.
His return to the field has been gradual. Frazier played limited snaps two weeks ago during a game against Vanderbilt but was pulled out of that contest. Since then, his only playing time has come in the second half of the Vanderbilt game. This limited usage highlights the cautious approach Georgia has taken with his recovery from the rib injury.
Before missing the Alabama game, Frazier was seen emotional on the sidelines while watching from the stands. He did not participate in the 20-17 win over the Tide, which remains Georgia’s most recent completed contest. The sight of the star running back unable to play added a somber tone to the team's preparation for the rivalry game.
Backup Performances and Coaching Reaction
With Frazier sidelined, reserve running back Dwight Phillips stepped into a larger role against Alabama. Phillips rushed for 120 yards on 17 carries in the victory. Bo Walker also contributed to the ground game, adding six carries for 69 yards.
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart praised Phillips’ performance after the Alabama win. Smart highlighted Phillips’ toughness and noted that the reserve running back did not complain about the increased workload. Smart drew a parallel to past experiences in his career, recalling a previous game where Torin Kirtsey carried the ball approximately 30 times. He described Phillips as a "great kid" and emphasized how special he is to the team.
Frazier’s Durability and Season Statistics
Frazier’s availability had been a point of focus for Georgia fans and analysts leading up to the Auburn game. The Compton native has established a reputation for durability in his college career. Prior to this rib injury, Frazier had missed only one game over the previous two seasons. He is considered one of the most durable running backs in college football.
This season, Frazier has accumulated 211 yards on 26 carries with five touchdowns. Over his collegiate career, he has recorded 2,035 total yards on 361 touches with 20 touchdowns. These statistics underscore the value of his return to the starting lineup for the rivalry game against Auburn.
His return provides Georgia with its primary ball carrier after a stretch where backups Phillips and Walker carried the load. The Bulldogs will look to integrate Frazier back into the offense immediately as they prepare for the upcoming contest, relying on his proven track record of production and endurance.
