Rural Youth Drive AI Consumption Past U.S. Levels
India has surpassed the United States in terms of artificial intelligence consumption, marking a shift that is described as more social than technological. This trend is being increasingly driven by rural youth across the country.
Data indicates that 55 percent of youth in rural India use AI almost daily, while an additional 28 percent use the technology occasionally. This widespread adoption suggests that AI integration is moving beyond early adopters in major urban centers to become a routine part of daily life for younger demographics in less developed regions.
Tier 2 and 3 Cities See Faster Skills Growth
The expansion of AI capabilities is no longer confined to India's largest metropolitan hubs, which previously dominated the sector. Cities such as Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, and Mumbai are still significant players, but the pace of development in smaller urban areas is accelerating.
AI skills growth in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities is rising at a rate of 20 percent year-on-year. This figure exceeds the 14 percent year-on-year growth recorded in Tier 1 cities. Executives at the BW TopLine Leaders Summit 2026 identified manufacturing, infrastructure, digital payments, and AI-enabled sales execution as key enablers of India's next growth cycle, noting that this expansion is centered on underserved consumers beyond the largest cities.
Infrastructure and Connectivity Enable Expansion
The scaling of AI beyond major metros relies heavily on underlying infrastructure. India currently has over 900 million internet users. The expanding rollout of 5G networks is enabling AI-powered applications to run affordably on cloud platforms, lowering the barrier to entry for smaller businesses and individuals in Tier 2 and Tier 3 locations.
Applications in Healthcare and Agriculture
The advancement of AI use in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities is playing a significant role in driving AI-led growth, particularly in sectors where resource distribution has historically been uneven. In healthcare, the technology addresses gaps where access to specialists and advanced diagnostics remains limited.
In the agriculture and dairy sectors, platforms such as Stellapps are being utilized in cities including Varanasi, Indore, and Patna. These tools allow farmers to monitor cattle health via wearables and optimize milk collection processes.
Small business owners in these regions are also adopting AI-driven tools for inventory tracking, local customer engagement, and multilingual voice search, further embedding the technology into the local economic fabric.
