Jammu Police Book Army Officer's Wife for Alleged Espionage Over Suspected Chinese Links

Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case against the wife of a senior Army officer, accusing her of alleged espionage in connection with suspected links to foreign intelligence operatives, including individuals associated with China. The case was formally booked at the Gandhi Nagar Police Station on October 16 under FIR No. 290/2026.

According to reports from LatestLY, the investigation is focused on determining whether the accused collected or shared sensitive defence-related information while engaged in writing research papers and articles. The police have stated that the woman, who hails from Telangana and currently resides in Jammu, has been questioned but was not arrested as of October 18.

Allegations of Deceptive Engagement

News9Live reports that the investigation centers on allegations that the accused shared sensitive defence information with foreign operatives. These operatives reportedly approached the woman under the guise of researchers and academicians. Initially, the interactions were described as discussing general topics such as environment and geopolitics. However, police allege that the conversation eventually shifted to subjects concerning defence and national security.

The FIR invokes Sections 3 and 5 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, along with Sections 152 and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), according to Zee News. The accused is suspected of sharing sensitive information, documents, photographs, and electronic data through encrypted communication channels with individuals linked to foreign intelligence agencies.

Legal Framework and Potential Penalties

The legal charges carry significant weight under Indian law. Section 152 of the BNS deals with acts endangering India’s sovereignty, unity, and integrity, carrying a potential sentence of seven years to life imprisonment. Additionally, Section 3 of the Official Secrets Act carries a maximum term of 14 years for spying.

Police are currently investigating digital communications and financial transactions related to the case. Authorities have seized devices belonging to the accused for forensic examination to substantiate the allegations of data sharing with foreign entities.
