Mankato Residents Gather for Election Integrity Discussion
MANKATO — With four weeks remaining until Election Day, residents of Mankato’s Lincoln Park neighborhood gathered for a Front Yard Forum dedicated to election integrity. The event featured Michael Stalberger, the deputy county administrator and main election administrator for Blue Earth County, as the primary speaker.
Stephanie Drago, an organizer of the event, stated that the purpose of inviting Stalberger was to provide residents with a clear understanding of local voting mechanics. According to Drago, Stalberger explains the election process in a neutral, nonpartisan manner.
Technical Safeguards and Data Protocols
During his presentation, Stalberger addressed technical aspects of the voting system, specifically noting that tabulation machines are not connected to the Internet. He also described the statewide voter registration system (SVRS), which is utilized to check for flags on voter registrations.
Stalberger explained the protocol for handling flagged data within the county. He stated that when voter data is flagged, it is sent to the county, which then passes the information to the county attorney’s office for prosecution.
Polling Place Security and Federal Observation
The forum included questions from attendees regarding security protocols at polling locations. Sophie Hoiseth, an attendee, asked about the presence of federal officials observing voters in Minnesota.
Stalberger reported that individuals attempting to intimidate or obstruct voters are prohibited from entering polling places or the surrounding 100-foot buffer zone. He clarified that law enforcement presence is only permitted if called by the head election judge.
While Stalberger confirmed that Blue Earth County has had to request law enforcement response at polling places, he stated that no issues with federal officials have occurred in the county.
Restoring Confidence Through Local Engagement
Hoiseth noted that Front Yard Forums aim to combat the erosion of trust in institutions caused by the Internet. The goal of these gatherings is to restore trust in neighbors and local leadership through direct engagement.
