Rasmussen’s Dominance Propels Rays to Crucial ALCS Lead
Drew Rasmussen delivered a masterclass in pitching efficiency, allowing just one run over seven innings to secure his second postseason victory as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026.
The win gave Tampa Bay a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series, placing them on the precipice of clinching their third AL pennant and first since 2020. The victory also carries significant historical weight; Cleveland has not won an ALCS when trailing 3-2, while since the LCS expanded to seven games in 1985, road teams winning Game 5 for a 3-2 lead have won the series four of five times.
Rasmussen’s performance was defined by his ability to shut down the Guardians' offense after early contact. After Chase DeLauter singled with two outs in the first inning, Rasmussen retired nine straight batters. He finished the game allowing four hits and walking one while striking out six.
The right-hander’s postseason resume has been impeccable. Rasmussen is now 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA in three postseason starts, striking out 23 and walking only three across those outings.
Early Runs Set the Tone for Tampa Bay
The Rays established their advantage through consistent scoring in the early innings, tallying single runs in each of the first three. The offensive output was fueled by a leadoff presence that has been relentless throughout the series; Tampa Bay’s leadoff hitter reached base in the first four innings and six times overall, with Rays’ leadoff batters reaching in 10 of 14 innings dating back to Saturday.
In the first inning, Yandy Díaz led off with a line-drive double over center-fielder Petey Halpin. He later scored on a bases-loaded walk by Parker Messick to Jonny DeLuca, providing an early 1-0 advantage.
The second inning saw Bryan Baker drive in Ben Williamson with a single, extending the lead to 2-0. The third inning added insurance against reliever Tim Herrin, as Liam Hicks looped a curveball to center field to score Chandle, making it 3-0.
Offensively, Díaz was a key contributor with three hits. Jonathan Aranda and Liam Hicks each recorded two hits and drove in a run, providing the necessary production to support Rasmussen’s outing.
Bullpen Seals the Series Clinch Opportunity
With the lead secured, Tampa Bay’s bullpen worked to preserve the advantage. Cam Booser and Tyler Wells handled the eighth inning, with Wells striking out José Ramírez to strand a runner in scoring position, preventing any potential rally.
Bryan Baker closed out the game in the ninth inning, converting his 35th straight save chance and his fifth of this postseason. The final out came when Travis Bazzana hit a groundout that ended the game with Jo Adell on second base for Cleveland.
While the Rays’ pitching dominated, Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan stood out defensively. Kwan had two of Cleveland’s five hits and made two fine defensive plays, including throwing out Taylor Walls and making a leaping catch for Victor Mesa Jr.’s drive.
The Rays will now look to close out the series on Monday at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. If necessary, Game 7 would be played on Tuesday, with the World Series scheduled to start Friday against National League champion Milwaukee.
