Tampa Bay Takes Control in Game 4
The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Cleveland Guardians 7-3 in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series on Saturday, tying the postseason series at 2-2. The victory shifted momentum in the ALCS, forcing a decisive Game 5 after both teams split the first four contests.
Tampa Bay built its advantage through timely offense and capitalization on Cleveland defensive mistakes. The Rays added two insurance runs in the ninth inning to secure the win and prevent the Guardians from mounting a comeback.
Halpin’s Defensive Stand
A highlight of the game occurred in the top of the fourth inning when Cleveland outfielder Petey Halpin made a diving catch against the center field wall. The play robbed Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero of extra bases after the ball left Caminero’s bat at 110.7 mph and traveled an estimated 410 feet.
Halpin, described as the Guardians’ "best finding in 2026" and their primary breakout star, put his body on the line to make the stop. The catch followed a go-ahead home run by Halpin in Game 3 of the series.
Foster Griffin praised the defensive effort, stating that Halpin is a "Gold Glove-caliber type player" and calling the specific catch "unbelievable." Despite the impressive defensive display, Cleveland’s overall fielding struggles contributed to their defeat.
Defensive Errors Shift Momentum
Cleveland’s defensive issues became apparent in the top of the seventh inning. DeLauter admitted fault for misplaying a ground ball during the frame. He acknowledged responsibility for the error, stating, "Put that one on me," after the mistake allowed two runs to score.
The error widened the Rays' lead to 5-1 at that point in the game. Although the Guardians managed to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the deficit proved too large to overcome.
Tampa Bay’s offense capitalized on Cleveland’s mistakes while maintaining their own offensive pressure. The addition of two insurance runs in the ninth inning ensured the Rays would not lose the lead and allowed them to tie the ALCS series at 2-2 heading into the next game.
