Announcement at ADL Event

Selma Blair announced on Thursday that she is producing a documentary titled "Hineni" (Here I Am) focused on the subject of antisemitism. The actress revealed the project during her appearance at the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) State of the Arts Reception in New York City.

Blair described the film as an effort to articulate perspectives she felt unable to express when she first addressed her previous controversies. "The opposite of erased is making something," Blair said regarding the production, noting that the documentary would allow her to say what she "couldn’t say two years ago" during her initial apology.

The announcement marks a significant public step for the actress more than two years after she faced widespread criticism and professional consequences for remarks she made regarding Islam. Blair stated that the documentary is intended to engage with complex political and religious landscapes, including travel to Israel to demonstrate why the land holds personal significance beyond abstraction.

Details of the Documentary Project

According to Blair, the film will feature direct engagement with individuals who hold opposing viewpoints. She committed to including these disagreements in the final edit, stating she would "talk to people who disagree with her on camera" and keep those conflicts visible in the cut.

The production aims to explore the intersection of her Jewish identity and the political discourse surrounding Israel and Palestine. Blair indicated that the project is driven by a desire to present her own narrative after years of being removed from public platforms.

Professional Fallout From 2024 Comments

The documentary follows a period of intense professional isolation for Blair, which she described as being "erased" from the entertainment industry. In February 2024, Blair posted comments on social media targeting Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) and Rep. Rashida Talib (D-MI). Her post read: "Thank you so much. Deport all these terrorist supporting goons. Islam has destroyed Muslim countries and then they come here and destroyed minds. They know they are liars. Twisted justifications. May they meet their fate."

Blair acknowledged the "ignorance and rage" inherent in those words but maintained that she left the original comment online because "the comment was not the story." She issued an immediate apology for the remarks, stating she meant it then and means it now.

The backlash resulted in the immediate termination of her professional relationships. Blair reported that brands she worked with disappeared within a day. Her representation, including her agency at CAA and publicists at Narrative PR, parted ways with her following the comments.

Blair listed the extent of her isolation, noting that her lawyer, book agent, book publicist, social media manager, and the manager of thirty years were all gone. She also noted that her son’s godmother, who was her best friend, was among those who left her circle.

While Blair acknowledged that some friends in the business quietly stood by her, she emphasized that most connections had severed ties. "No one returned my calls," she said, describing a total breakdown in professional communication following the controversy.

Previous Public Persona and Diagnosis

Blair’s career has previously been defined by her openness about personal health struggles. She was the subject of the Discovery+ documentary "Introducing, Selma Blair," which explored her diagnosis with multiple sclerosis. That project highlighted her resilience in the face of physical challenges, a theme that contrasts with the current controversy surrounding her political and religious commentary.

The new film, "Hineni," represents a shift from documenting her health journey to addressing the social and professional consequences of her public statements. By producing a documentary that engages directly with dissenting voices, Blair aims to reclaim agency over her narrative in an industry that had previously discarded her.
