Putin Commends Modi’s Diplomatic Push for Ukraine Peace
Indian Union Home Minister Amit Shah has highlighted Russian President Vladimir Putin’s public appreciation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s persistent efforts to help resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Shah stated that India has emerged as a "trusted voice for global peace" under the Prime Minister's leadership, citing Putin’s recognition of these diplomatic initiatives.
The acknowledgment came during a speech by Putin at the Valdai Discussion Club in Moscow on Thursday. Speaking to an audience of political analysts and journalists, the Russian President praised Modi for his consistent engagement on the issue, noting that the Indian leader has shown keen interest in facilitating a peaceful resolution despite the complex geopolitical landscape.
Putin described the relationship between Russia and India as "very good" and "friendly," emphasizing that Modi is one of the few world leaders who consistently raises questions about ending the conflict in Ukraine during their bilateral meetings. The Russian President stated that he considers it his duty to speak frankly, acknowledging that while India maintains a neutral position, it remains deeply interested in bringing the war to an end.
"Very Good Ideas" for Resolution
During his address, Putin revealed that Modi has offered "very good ideas" for finding a mutually acceptable solution to the crisis. While he declined to go into specific details regarding these proposals, the Russian President expressed gratitude for Modi’s commitment to ending the conflict peacefully and as quickly as possible.
Putin noted that Modi’s approach is characterized by a constant effort to move humanity from an "endless war" toward a definitive end to hostilities. The Indian Prime Minister has previously stressed that every step taken toward peace fills humanity with new hope and enthusiasm, a sentiment that resonated with the Russian leadership.
Shah Highlights Gandhi’s Legacy on Birth Anniversary
In response to Putin’s remarks, Amit Shah took to the social media platform X to share his perspective. He posted that Putin’s appreciation of Prime Minister Modi’s tireless efforts toward global peace brings "immense pride" to every Indian.
Shah pointed out the symbolic timing of these diplomatic developments, noting that Putin’s remarks coincided with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The Indian Home Minister emphasized that Gandhi gave the world the enduring message of peace and non-violence, values that continue to guide India’s foreign policy under Modi’s administration.
Shah elaborated that during periods marked by wars and conflicts, Prime Minister Modi has consistently conveyed that solutions do not emerge from battlefields but through dialogue and diplomacy. He added that India, under Modi’s leadership, has stepped forward with help in situations of war or calamity, giving recognition to the ancient Indian tradition of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ or "the world is one family."
Recent Diplomatic Engagements on Peace Efforts
The current diplomatic exchanges follow a series of high-level meetings between Modi and Putin over the past few months, underscoring India’s active role in global conflict resolution.
Last month, Prime Minister Modi met with Putin on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. During this encounter, Modi reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy were the only viable paths forward for resolving ongoing conflicts. He also stated that India stands ready to assist in peace efforts regarding key regional and global issues, including conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region.
Earlier in August, during a meeting with Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Modi again affirmed that India continues to back all efforts aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine. These repeated assurances highlight New Delhi’s consistent stance as a mediator seeking a diplomatic exit from the prolonged war.
India’s Growing Voice in Global Crises
Shah emphasized that India’s voice matters greatly during global crises, with Modi Ji’s words being listened to with keen attention by international partners. He noted that Putin’s remarks serve as a testament to the effectiveness of India’s diplomatic outreach.
The Home Minister stated that Shah posted on X that Putin’s appreciation of PM Modi’s persistent efforts towards global peace was a matter of pride for every Indian. This sentiment reflects a broader narrative within the Indian government regarding its role on the world stage, positioning New Delhi not just as a non-aligned nation, but as an active participant in shaping global stability.
As the conflict in Ukraine continues to draw international scrutiny, India’s dual engagement with both Western powers and Russia has often been scrutinized. However, officials like Shah argue that this balanced approach allows India to maintain its strategic autonomy while contributing to global peace efforts. The recognition from Moscow adds weight to New Delhi’s claim that it is a trusted voice capable of bridging divides in times of war.
Putin’s comments at the Valdai Discussion Club, coupled with Shah’s public response, illustrate the mutual respect between the two leaders regarding their shared interest in de-escalation. While specific details of any potential peace plan remain undisclosed, the consistent messaging from both Moscow and New Delhi suggests that India remains a key player in any future negotiations aimed at ending the Ukraine conflict.
