Record Auto-Grade Volumes Drive Indian Growth
Tata Steel reported its strongest quarterly performance in its Indian operations for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027 (Q2FY27), which ended in September 2026. Steel deliveries at the company’s domestic facilities grew 7.6% year-on-year to reach 5.97 million tonnes, according to provisional data released by the manufacturer.
The company highlighted that it achieved its "best-ever Q2" volumes for auto-grade steel during this period. Auto-grade steel deliveries reached nearly 1.1 million tonnes, driven by a 19% year-on-year surge in special products. This growth in the automotive segment contributed significantly to the overall expansion of domestic operations.
Tata Steel attributed the increase in Indian steel deliveries to robust demand from key user industries, specifically the automotive and construction sectors. The company also pointed to capacity expansion efforts at its facilities in Kalinganagar, Odisha, and Jamshedpur as factors supporting the higher output levels.
European Operations Face Continued Headwinds
While domestic operations expanded, Tata Steel’s European steel operations remained a drag on the consolidated entity during the same quarter. The company cited ongoing regional wars and regulatory changes in Europe as primary challenges affecting its performance in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.
The global economic environment has presented additional complexities for the steel industry since February 2026, when the Middle East war began impacting international markets. Within India, weather conditions have also influenced industrial activity; deficient monsoon seasons in states such as Maharashtra and Karnataka have affected certain sectors of the economy.
Industry Context and Capacity Rankings
Tata Steel’s domestic growth occurred against a backdrop of expanding national steel production. According to data from the global industry body worldsteel.org, India’s total steel output grew 6.1% year-on-year to 101.1 million tonnes between January and July 2026.
In contrast, China’s steel output declined 3.1% year-on-year to 577 million tonnes during the same January-to-July 2026 period.
Regarding its domestic standing, Tata Steel ended fiscal year 2026 with a domestic steel capacity of nearly 27.4 million tonnes. Its nearest rival, JSW Steel, held a domestic crude steel installed capacity of 36.4 million tonnes at that time.
The government is scheduled to release gross domestic product (GDP) growth data for the second quarter of FY27 on November 30, 2026.
