Hanshin Tigers Announce Sato's Availability for International Free Agency

The Hanshin Tigers have announced that Teruaki Sato will be made available during the upcoming offseason to pursue a career in North American baseball, according to Dose.ca. The 27-year-old slugger is preparing for a transition to Major League Baseball after six seasons with the Japanese club.

Once Sato officially becomes a free agent, he will have a 45-day window to sign a contract with an MLB team. During this period, the Hanshin Tigers are entitled to receive compensation based on the size of the deal Sato signs. The compensation structure is set at 25% of the first $25 million of the contract, 17.5% of the next $25 million, and 15% of any amount exceeding $50 million.

Sato has established himself as one of the premier hitters in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). Over his six seasons with the Hanshin Tigers, he has recorded 167 home runs and posted an on-base plus slugging (OPS) average of .854. His performance last season was particularly notable, as he won the Central League Most Valuable Player award for the 2025 season.

During that MVP-caliber campaign, Sato batted .277 with 40 home runs and 102 RBIs. In the preceding season, he was among the league's most prolific hitters, posting a .317 batting average with 39 home runs and 106 RBIs.

MLB Interest and Contract Timeline

The New York Yankees have expressed interest in signing Sato, and several other MLB teams are vying for his services. The timing of his signing is critical due to potential labor relations issues in Major League Baseball.

It remains unclear whether a potential labor dispute or lockout in the Manfred era will affect international free agents this year. However, reports indicate that Sato may need to sign a contract before December 1 to avoid having his signing window shortened by such a dispute.

Recent Japanese MLB Transitions

Sato's potential move follows a recent trend of high-profile Japanese players transitioning to Major League Baseball. Last winter, three other Japanese players made the leap to North America: Kazuma Okamoto, Munetaka Murakami, and Tatsuya Imai.

Okamoto signed with the Toronto Blue Jays for $60 million over four years. Murakami signed with the Chicago White Sox for $34 million over two years. Imai signed with the Houston Astros for $54 million over three years.
