United Nations Condemns Mass Detentions

The United Nations Human Rights Office has criticized the Indian government for detaining thousands of demonstrators and activists who were protesting against the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) controversial voter-roll revision. The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights issued a statement urging India to immediately release people described as "arbitrarily detained" in connection with protests alleging misconduct by electoral authorities.

The UN statement specifically condemned the mass detentions of various groups, including demonstrators, protest leaders, civil society members, lawyers, and journalists. The organization highlighted the detention of Abhijeet Dipke, identified as the founder of the satirical "cockroach" movement, among those held by authorities.

The UN called for the immediate release of all individuals detained in relation to these protests, framing the arrests as a violation of human rights standards regarding freedom of assembly and expression.

Protesters Challenge Voter Roll Integrity

The demonstrations in Delhi were organized against the ECI's recent actions regarding voter registration. Protesters have accused the Election Commission of disenfranchising 130 million voters, with particular emphasis on Muslim citizens, to favor the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Alongside accusations of mass disenfranchisement, demonstrators have demanded the resignation of Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protests reflect growing public opposition to the ECI's management of electoral rolls and its perceived political bias.

Delhi Authorities Impose Security Measures

In response to the anticipated demonstrations, Delhi authorities deployed heavy security forces across the capital to prevent crowds from gathering at designated protest sites. The local administration also shut down several metro stations and imposed restrictions on online communications to limit coordination among protesters.

Leaders of the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) movement were detained ahead of a major planned protest against the Election Commission in Delhi, further escalating tensions between civil society groups and state authorities.
