The City of Vancouver has doubled its budget for the 2026 civic election to $9.4 million in order to expand voting opportunities.
According to Daily Hive, voters participating in the fall election will see a significantly expanded operation at polling locations. The planned changes include more polling places and a major increase in advance voting opportunities.
The budget also funds additional accessibility measures for voters and a larger elections workforce that includes security personnel.
This financial adjustment follows significant public and media criticism regarding the hours-long lineups faced by voters during the April 5, 2025, Vancouver City Council by-election. That election was held to fill two vacant city councillor seats.
The civic election is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026. The ballot will include positions for one mayor, 10 members of the Vancouver City Council, seven positions on the Vancouver Park Board, and nine positions on the Vancouver School Board.
City staff indicated that the $9.4 million figure does not include a contingency fund for unexpected costs.
